Tharai Paalam at Kuzhithurai: A Lifeline During Normal Days, a Challenge During Monsoon

Located near Kuzhithurai in Marthandam, Kanyakumari District, this low-level bridge, locally known as Tharai Paalam, serves as an important crossing point for local residents and daily commuters.
Under normal conditions, the bridge provides a convenient route for people traveling between both sides of the river. However, during the monsoon season, the situation changes dramatically.

Heavy rainfall causes the water level in the river to rise rapidly, allowing floodwater to flow directly over the surface of the bridge. During such periods, authorities close access from both ends to ensure public safety.
The bridge often becomes completely covered by fast-moving water, making it impossible for pedestrians and vehicles to cross safely.

Another challenge faced during the rainy season is the formation of algae on the bridge surface. The constant presence of water creates a slippery layer, increasing the risk of accidents for those attempting to walk across.
For this reason, access to the bridge is restricted whenever water levels rise beyond safe limits.

The photographs featured here were captured during a period of heavy rainfall when the bridge was temporarily closed. On regular days, when water levels are low and conditions are safe, commuters can freely cross between both sides using this route.

Despite the seasonal difficulties, Tharai Paalam remains an important part of the local transportation network and serves as a reminder of how closely life in the region is connected to the changing rhythms of nature.
